This article discusses the role in which rough sets theory plays for the product development with the purpose of Kansei. The product development is to design attributes so that a new product belongs to an intended class, when the new product is evaluated. It is noticed that the rough sets theory is effective as a means of knowledge acquisition for design, when a product attributes are expressed as a categorical data. Reducts as decision rules are used, because not a rough rule but a sure rule is necessary on the relation between attributes and classes in the knowledge acquisition for the design. Data referring to cars and reducts calculated from the data are displayed, and the expression as knowledge for the design is shown. It is explained that the recognition of human being is equal to characteristics grasp, and that a characteristics is equivalent to a reduct, and plural existence of reduct corresponds to the linkage structure in the human recognition. In addition, watching this correspondence, it is discussed that a design knowledge which can cover the diversity of human recognition is obtained by a combination of reducts. And, it was examined that optimality and creativity in the product development are related to the combination of reducts. Finally, it is shown that a selecting method of reducts and an expansion of the theory to be suitable for a property of Kansei data are problems in the future.
