THE PROPRIETY OF MOVEABLE STORAGE UNIT FOR THE WORK PERFORMANCE WITHIN THE JAPANESE WORKPLACE : A Study on the Storage System Organization in the Japanese Workplace

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the suitability of the moveable storage unit that is used individually for the work performance. For case studies, we visited four companies of furniture design in Tokyo and Fukuoka cities to evaluate their workplaces including both the work style and its effect on the storage units. Furthermore, to recognize the workers opinions about the fitness of moveable storage to their work. Based on the survey, the followings are the major findings resulting from this study: Basically, the work style is influenced by the work type. Accordingly, there are different kinds of work style within those companies. This study is focused on two kinds of them. In the first kind, the work type is characterized by routine work process that is carried out by individuals. This type of work exists, e.g. in the account division. About the second kind, the work type is characterized by creative knowledge work that is carried out by groups. This type of work exists in the design division. In those divisions, the moveable storage is required but in different percentages, its usage is influenced by the work style. The movement of moveable storage is effected by an available office space and the unit's load. This study reveals that however the nature of moveable storage is flexible, it isn't suitable for using in some offices.
