The role of a professional interior designer is often compared with that of a physician due to the responsibilities for health, safety, and welfare of the users. Therefore interior design programs need to be verified, evaluated, and guided by a set of expectations in order to produce competent interior design professionals with quality and integrity. The foundation for Interior Design Education Research (FIDER) is an organization that evaluates and accredits interior design programs in the United States and Canada to ensure quality education. It also sets and revises standards that are used for evaluating each program. The purpose of this paper is to introduce and review the accrediting system of FIDER and analyze its latest standards that were published in 2000. The authors have also analyzed the standards according to the definitions of a professional interior designer that were established by the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) in order to find relationships between expectations of interior design education and professional practice.
