Organophosphorus resistant colonies of Culex pipiens molestus were collected from three sewage tanks of a building in Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo, in April 1988. Several insecticides such as fenitrothion, dichlorvos, chlorpyrifos-methyl, fenthion, phenothrin and permethrin have been heavily applied to a tank since 1964. The LC_<50> values for 4th instar larvae and their resistance ratios (in parentheses) were : fenitrothion 1.01ppm (101), fenthion 1.08ppm (161.2), temefos 0.17ppm (212.5), malathion 10.1ppm (336.7), dichlorvos 1.25ppm (90.6), chlorpyrifos-methyl 5.7ppm (686.7), chlorpyrifos-ethyl 0.028ppm (164.7), diazinon 1.15ppm (35.9), propetamphos 3.3ppm (194.1), prothiofos 0.49ppm (8.4), propoxur 0.725ppm (1.84), permethrin 0.14ppm (14.7) and phenothrin 0.28ppm (32.2). High resistance to OP-compounds such as fenitrothion and fenthion may reflect the history of application of these compounds in the breeding site. High cross resistance was observed in temefos and malathion which have not been used in this breeding site. However, resistance to prothiofos, an asymmetric phosphoric ester, was low with the resistance ratio of 8.4. The larvae were also moderately resistant to pyrethroids, but they did not show resistance to a carbamate (propoxur).
