The mite, C. malaccensis, originally isolated from rice and kept for several generations, was examined as to its morphological charcteristics in each stage of growth, partly by means of scanning electron microscope. The consecutive observation on the evolving variations of the teeth of the inner palpal comb and the basal process of the palpal claw of the female confirmed that a variation which was once identified as C. fortis, did belong to C. malaccensis. An inverse correlation (r : -0.72) was noted between the two ratios : ratio of the length to the width of the palpal femur, and that of the distance between the pair of posterior central setae to the distance between a posterior central seta and a nearby posterior marginal seta on the anterior dorsal plate of the male. A comparative study of characteristics in each stage discloses that there are two prominent basal teeth present on the palpal claw during immature stages. The number of setae of the palpal femur, palpal genu and idiosoma during immature stages was generally less than that during adult stage. The chaetotaxy of legs of deutonymph becomes equal to that of adult, while it remains immature in protonymph and larval stages. The morphological properties common through all the stages (from larva up to adult) are large palpal claw, palpal comb, segmental number of peritreme, feather-like setae on idiosoma, scapular setae, solenidia of leg I, II and setal number of femur I, II, tibia II, III. A comparison of C. malaccensis with Cheyletid mites of Volgin (1966,1969) on each stage suggests that the following morphological characteristics should be regarded as supra-generic and supra-specific features : ventral seta of gnathosoma, ala of rostrum of male, numbers of dorsal and ventral setae of idiosoma and numbers of setae of legs except femur IV and tarsus I.
