Japanese students usually use infinitives more often than participles or gerunds in writing. This has been attested in Terada (1978). There are, however, some doubts whether they can use infinitives correctly. In the course of my classes in writing, I have found some common errors concerning the uses of infinitives, especially of infinitival complements . In order to confirm the faults of students, I had my students translate nine Japanese sentences into English, which were based on the data I had gathered from students' compositions. The suspicion proved to be true. This paper tries a classification of the causes of the errors, making use of Selinker's theory, which supposes the existence of five central processes in learning a second language : 1 ) Ianguage transfer, 2 ) transfer of training, 3 ) strategies of second language learning, 4 ) strategies of second language communication, and 5 ) overgeneralization of TL linguistic material. Most of the errors seem to be ascribed to two of these processes : Ianguage transfer and overgeneralization. Students have an inclination to transfer Japanese sentence constructions into English, resulting in making ungrammatical English sentences. Students also seem to overgeneralize the rules of complement constructions and are apt to use overly 'that' complements, which appear to be approximate to Japanese embedded sentences. Finally I propose several hints a teacher should bear in mind when he wants to teach complement constructions.
