This study i nvestigated the relative effec Liveness of a study abroad program in learning English as a foreign language. The subjects were 205 junior college students. The experimental group attended a five-week study abroad program in Australia while the control group was noL involved at all in the program. Proficiency data as well as student question-naires were gathered and analyzed before and aLter the Australia study program. Three measures of proficiency were used to compare the expe rime n ta I group and the control gloup: their scores in listening, reading, and structure tests before and after the Australia study program. As the students in the experlmental group were divided among 31 different Australlan high schools, individual and total gains in the above three tests were compared amo ng three gro ups depending on the number of In order to check the students studying at each school. development n_f oral proficiency in the experimental group, two additional oral tests were administered to eight students. Results of the above tests indicated that the experimental group showed significant improvement compared to the conttol group in listening and structure tests. In the listening test of the experimental group, there was a significant difference between students divided in small groups and those in large groups. The eight students who were administered two additional oral tests also showed a significant difference in both tests. Fur thermore, student questionnaires i ndica ted their positlve reactlons to the study abroad program.
