This paper draws on findings of the Lancaster-Leeds Language Learning in Large Classes Research Projectl and observation of foreign language learners, and it argues that the characteristics of language learners graduating from large classes provide important clues' to help identify some of the problems that large class teaching give rise to. Students exposed to long periods of study in large classesoftendisplay poor s tudy s kills and an unbalanced development of language skills . They are f requently dissatisfied wi th thei r foreign I anguage competence, and this acts as a brake on further study. At the same time the large class study has conditioned these students to specific methods of studying that they have difficulty deviating from.
