• This paper deals with NP order in Japanese and English along with Kuno's (1987) Empathy Perspective Theory (EPT, hereafter). A hypothetical principle--"surprise"-triggering NP order--which characterizes or determines NP order in a sentence is introduced at the beginning of this paper. It is argued that this "surprise"-triggering principle applies well where Kuno's EPT cannot account for. A couple of analyses are made about "surprise" in the body of this paper.
