The purpose of this study is to suggest some basic ideas for improving methods and materials based on analysis of the second language ,acquisition process of three Japanese children. This is based on a longitudinal case study of the first year of language ,acquisition on the basis of the transcription of tapes of the children's ,conversations. The three children are ten years eleven months, seven years eight months, and five years. Acquisition of morphemes is as-sumed when they are used ten or more times consecutively at least ,eighty per cent accuracy both semantically and grammatically. Acquisition of sentence patterns is assumed when they are used five or more consecutively at least eighty per cent accuracy both grammatically and ,contextually. Communication strategies are also analyzed with special reference to development of grammatical ability. This study of second language acquisition could suggest new ideas for the renovation of conventional teaching methods and materials in TEFL. For example: 1 . There exist orders of acquisition of both morphemes and sentence patterns in second language acquisition. These orders may come from autonomous brain function. If so, it will be necessary to consider them when determining teaching methods.
