This article describes a case of a hypothesis-proving approach to research. (RAO_3)n(BO)_m compounds in the R_2O_3-A_2O_3-BO system were synthesized by solid state reactions at elevated temperatures and their crystal structures were considered. In this case the compounds were designed by using a concept based partly on intuition-related experience and partly on theory. The research was conducted by repeating a cycle in which first, the syntheses and the experiments based on the design are tried, and then the design modified according to the results obtained. After adjusting the design, the experiments are reexecuted and the cycle repeated. In this research, many new compounds were synthesized according to a model based on very simple three crystal structures: Wurtzite type (ZnO), YAIO_3 and YFe_2O_4, the latter of which is an intermediate structure between the first two. The important points are as follows: YFe_2O_4 was divided into two parts YFeO_3テeO, with YFeO_3 and FeO then generalized to RAO_3 and BO, respectively. The structure of each of the parts was subsequently considered with reference to the Wurtzite-type crystal. Positive ions which would have a homologous structure were systematically applied with the aid of a database, and thermodynamic stability of the compounds was considered.
