Among the Japanese species of Tricyrtis, T. macropoda, T. affinis and T. chiugokuensis are closely related to each other and have been variously classified by the taxonomists. Reinvestigation was made here for several characteristic features of these species including the structure of the inflorescences, pubescences, morphology of rhizomes, and chemical contents of roots. The inflorescences of T. macropoda have been described as corymb, but is cyme as shown in Fig. 2-1. No distinct difference is observed on the inflorescence between T. affinis and T. chiugokuensis, occupied by the various intermediate forms (Fig. 3). The rhizome of T. macropoda lives for more than one year, usually for a few years (Fig. 4-1), and the starch is reserved in roots. On the other hand, the rhizome of T. affinis and T. chiugokuensis lives for only one year (Fig. 4-2, 3). Distinct yellow pigment of the anthraqinoid is present in the root of T. macropoda but absent in that of T. affinis and T. chiugokuensis. As the result, T. macropoda and T. affinis are concluded to be distinct species and T. chiugokuensis is reduced to T. affinis, as shown in the synonymic list given below. T. setouchiensis is here described new to science with the features as described on the following page.
