From 1964 to 1965, 26 cases of organic mercury poisoning were observed among villagers living along the Agano River of Niigata in Japan. For the purpose of an epidemiological survey of these areas, a rapid method of screening the patients was needed. This paper reports the simplicity of dithizone extraction which made the method highly suitable for quantitative determination of mercury in the hair, urine and blood of the patients. The possibility of the copper interference was also investigated. We tested the influence of copper at varying concentrations upon the mercury contents. Only high concentrations of copper were found to have significant effects.
