Seamen's sickness on board is almost occupied by diseases of digestive organs. The occurrence percentage of such diseases which ha been reported by several authors is from 23% to 28% among all diseases on board. The author experienced in ship's clinic that the occurrence percentage of digestive diseases reached 33.8% (74 cases) among all diseases (219 cases) during 6 months from December 1962 to May 1963. The author considered that the special life-environment of seamen might have caused such clinical tendency through some influence upon physical secretion of gastric juice. According to this consideration, the author investigated the acidity of gastric juice by gastrotest-method, without gastric catheters. Seventy-nine seamen were examined for 139 times from January 1962 to November 1963. The results are as follows: 1. At first, the author noticed an abvious decreasing tendency of the acidity. Cases over and within the normal acidity were 54 (39%), but those below the normal and of nil acidity were 85 (61%) among all cases (139). 2. As to the influence by season, the decreasing tendency was remarkable in summer, i.e. cases over and within the normal acidity were 36 (41.4%), and those below the normal and of nil acidity were 51 (58.6%). But, the Persian Gulf-Route are always under high temperature like the tropical zone, and there are no distinct seasonal temperature difference between summer and winter. Hence in the case of this route, the decresing tendency in winter season was rather remarkable, i.e. cases over and normal were 18 (34.6%), and cases low and nil were 34 (65.4%). 3. As to the influence by age, in accordance with the advance of age the decreasing tendency of the acidity was recognized. In the twenties, cases over and within the normal were 54%, but cases below the normal and nil were 46%, as contrasted to the above. In the thirties, cases over and within the normal were 35.5%, and below the normal and nil were 64.5%. The decreasing tendency became more obvious in the forties, namely, cases over and within the normal were 21%, but cases below the normal and nil were 79%. Cases over and within the normal acidity were not recognized in the fifties, while those below the normal was 25%, and those with nil acidity was 75%. 4. As to the influence by working position in the ship, those working at the engine part indicated the highest decreasing tendency than those at any other parts. Cases below the normal and nil acidity occupied 76.1%, while those over and within the normal were only 23.9%. In those working at the deck part, cases over and within the normal were 45.1%, and those below the normal and nil were 54.9%. In persons working at the wireless and the clerical parts, cases over and within the normal were 46.9%, while those below the normal and nil were 53.1%. The author considered the remarkable decreasing tendency in persons working at the engine part as due to the influence of the extraordinary high temperature in their working place.
