A time study was performed on 32 female workers working in a department store during 2 to 3 periods in a month (one period corresponded to one week or consisted of 6 working days), extending one year from June, 1957. Also, daily number of persons visiting that department store was counted for one year from April, 1958. Number of persons who visited the store was greatest on Sunday occupying 28.04 p.c. of the number of total week-days or of 6 days when the store was open, that is to say, it was about twice as many as those of other days. Hourly number was greatest from 13:30 to 14:30 and this occupied 13.71 p.c. of the number of whole day. The store was open for 8 hours. Of the whole 8 working hours 41.1 p.c. was spent on actual selling and 39.4 p.c. on preparatory activities. Daily walking distance was found to be 2,050 meters as averaged for each worker. As to waitresses working in the dining hall, of the whole working hours 40.1 p.c. was spent on actual service and 41.1 p.c. on preparatory activities. Their walking distance covered 4,664 meters on an average i.e. twice as much as that of the ordinary sales-women, and the total weight daily carried was 179,519 grams for each waitress and 2,105 grams at a time. Distribution of activities in the working hours much depended on the number of customers, and hence the performance showed some irregularities. Out of daily hours, those spent on labour reproduction was 617 minutes, among which hours of sleep was 470 minutes, and much depended on the hours trasportation.
