This study was designed to investigate differences in implementing the management training courses between Chinese managers in state-owned (SOC) and joint venture (JVC) corporations, and to explore the problems of management training and education programs within Chinese corporations. The sample for the questionnaire survey in Chinese SOCs and JVSs consisted of 519 managers. Results of the data analyses indicated that; (1) Managers in both SOCs and JVCs are aware of the importance of learning skills and knowledge regarding : business administration, marketing and leadership, and using computers and foreign languages. (2) Five major problems in management training and education exist in Chinese SOCs and JVCs, namely (a) Chinese managers are too busy to attend training courses, (b) not enough budget for providing effective management training and education especially in SOCs, (c) diffcult to evaluate the effectiveness of training and education, (d) Chinese managers pay little attention to management training and education, and (e) a shortage of training staff. In conclusion, five suggestions were put forward for upgrading Chinese management training and education systems.
