We develop a mathematical model for analyzing the evolution process of inter-organizational production distribution information networks. First, we define six types of alternative structures : independence, representation, centralization, direct-transaction, integration, and brokerage-transaction. Then we compare these structures in terms of three measures : degree of merchandise, coordination time, and distribution cost. We use these models to simulate how information technology affects the evolution process of such networks. Finally we examine the characteristics that achieve optimal effectiveness in such a network.
