This article explores the modern Japanese design focusing on the activities of Moriya Nobuo, Keiji Kobo, NRIIA mastermodel making team. Although they all worked on standardizing furniture, thier concepts of and purposes are different. For Moriya "standard" meant "a sample", Keiji Kobo "a fixed form" and NRIIA "a typical form". While thier concept of "standard" were different, they initially shared the same porposes of standardizaion : impoving a quality of private life. NRIIA's activity for standardazion, however, became to be let by the war-time goverment in order to control civilians' lives.
