Debate classes for students at a sub-native speaker level, whilst providing open opportunities for communication, require the introduction of what might be termed as templates for verbal activity to ensure that each participant in the class is armed prior to the moment of speech. Without such templates any given debate can all too easily slip into triteness and disorder stemming, not from a poor attitude or lack of intelligence, but rather from an understandable lack of linguistic ability. This results in a frustrating, unsatisfactory and demoralizing experience for the student as he or she uncovers a gulf between the high level of intellect that builds the desired message and the lower level of linguistic technique with which the message must be communicated. It is the task of the template to aid in the bridging of this gulf whilst simultaneously encouraging developments in language ability.
