How can we best prepare our students for life in the future? The paper looks at this key question in terms of two themes : English language education, and certain theories concerning changes currently taking place in the political, economic, social and economic arenas. Suggestions will be offered, from the literature, about the type of society, and in particular types of employment our students will face in the post-industrial world of the 21st century. Schools and colleges need to start preparing students and equip them with a different set of skills and resources required in our rapidly changing world. The paper will look at some of the concepts of the new postcorporate mindset, such as the concepts of 'discontinuous change' and 'collaborative individualism', and draw a parallel between the requirements of the new mindset and a more communicative approach to English language teaching. It is proposed that by applying many of the techniques discussed in "communicative language teaching", and in so doing developing such traits as individuality, critical-thinking and self-responsibilty, we could go a long way in furnishing students with the skills and resources they will need to prosper in the post-industrial, postcorporate 21st century.
