This study investigated the effect of differences in grade level (1) on Japanese students' metacoguitive awareness (i.e., judgrnents) about their reading abilities (i.e., their confidence), and reading strategies, and (2) on the relationships between the students' metacognitive awareness and their reading ability in EFL. The findings of the present study indicated some distinctive features of the metacognitive awareness of reading for the three groups. The results also revealed that there were some possible relationships between students' metacoguitive awareness and their reading ability. This suggests some metacognitive factors affect students' reading ability and strategies, and make reading difficult. It is necessary for English teachers to take into account the differences among the different grade levels in metacognitive awareness or perceptions about their reading and reading strategies.
