Detection and spatial dispersion of B chromosome in the triploid form of Lilium lancifolium, Liliaceae

Hypertriploid of Lilium lancifolium (tiger lily), 2n=37, was collected together with the usual triploid, 2n=36, in areas Taishaku-kyo, Hiroshima Prefecture, and Totsukawa, Nara Prefecture, Japan. An extra-chromosome of hypertriploid was very similar to B chromosome of the closely related species, L. leichtlinii var. maximowiczii in both conventional and C-banded karyotypes. In meiosis, this chromosome did not pair with chromosomes in a complement and behaved always as a univalent. Thus it was proved to be a B-typed chromosome. B chromosome was found exclusively to be linked to nucleolar type B in contrast to the usual triploid without B comprised of distinct nucleolar type C. Triploid tiger lily cultivated in the fields as vegetables was always comprised of nucleolar type B with one B, being dispersed within the areas surveyed. This fact implies that the original bulb possessing nucleolar type B was first introduced into the areas and has been maintained by means of vegetative reproductions. While triploid growing in the gardens consisted of karyotypes B with or without B chromosome and nucleolar type C. Such a diversification in karyotype might be brought about artificially through introduction by the migration of dwellers.
