New findings on the chromosomes of the dobsonfly Protohermes grandis were obtained from the study of larval gonads. The chromosome number of P. grandis is 2n=24. The diploid chromosome complement of this species consist of 11 pairs of autosomes plus XY chromosomes in male and XX in female. The autosomes include one pair of submetacentrics, 2 pairs of metacentrics, 7 pairs of telocentrics, and one pair of small chromosomes. Of the sex chromosomes the X is submetacentric, while the Y is the smallest chromosome of the set. The chromosomes of P. grandis from Japan are similar to those of Corydalus cornutus from the U.S.A. The sex chromosomes of MI spermatocytes invariably formed bivalents synchronously with the autosomes.
