The order Characiformes comprises about 1,400 species distributed across Africa and South and Central America. In spite of its large number of species and wide distribution, this group is poorly known in many ways, including the cytogenetic aspect. In order to achieve a better understanding on the relationships between members of the order Characiformes, specimens of Charax sp. (Characinae), Brachychalcinus copei (Stethaprioninae), and Steindachnerina cf. guentheri (Curimatidae) collected from the Sao Francisco stream (a tributary of the Acre River), Rio Branco, Acre, Brazil, were studied. The results showed that Charax sp. had 2n=52 chromosomes (22 M/SM+30 ST/A), B. copei 2n=50 chromosomes (42 M/SM+8 A), and S. cf. guentheri 2n=54 chromosomes (54 M/SM). All the species exhibited only one chromosome pair with nucleolar organizer regions at terminal position and small heterochromatic segments, mainly distributed at pericentromeric position on the chromosomes. These results are similar to those described in the literature and suggest that the groups formed by the species under study are likely to be natural groups.
