Three forms and two between-forms hybrids of the Chrysolina angusticollis complex from northern Japan have been cytogenetically analyzed. Chrysolina angusticollis has shown a male meioformula of 20+XY and 2n=42 chromosomes whereas Ch. aino and the Soranumadake form of Ch. aino have shown 19+XO and 2n (♂)=39 chromosomes. Both types of male hybrids derived from reciprocal crosses between the two forms of Ch. aino displayed the same diploid number as their parental forms. However, one of these two types of hybrids had no meiotic cells while another showed abnormal spermatozoa thereby indicating male hybrid sterility of all of them. The chromosome numbers of the Ch. angusticollis species complex are similar to those reported in other Asteraceae-feeding species of Chrysolina, namely those of the subgenera Chalcoidea and Heliostola (2n=40), Allochrysolina (2n=42) and Anopachys (2n (♂)=31-45). This finding may suggest a relatively allied interrelationship among them.
