Chromosome studies were carried out on two species of the order Tetraodontiformes that are commonly found in the waters of Guanabara Bay, Coast of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Giemsa karyotypes of Sphoeroides tyleri (Tetraodontidae) and Chilomycterus spinosus (Diodontidae) were investigated. Sphoeroides tyleri presents 2n=46, having the same diploid value of other Sphoeroides species that have been investigated. On the other hand, C. spinosus presents the most derived karyotype among all the Tetraodontiformes investigated thus far (2n=52).
