Chloroform-methanol extracts of the nematodes Ditylenchus dipsaci and Ditylenchus triformis contained a biologically-active compound consistent with the characteristics of IAAOCH_3 in Avena first internode bioassay; acid alumina chromatography; TLC; 70% aqueous methanol: n-hexane partitioning; DMAC color reaction and KOH hydrolysis. Infra-red spectra of isolated material indicated the following possible structure: No growth promoting substances were detected in Turbatrix aceti, cultured axenically. Pyrenochaeta terrestris, the fungal host for D. triformis, contained a compound with properties identical to IAA. The host for D. dipsaci, 2,4-D callused alfalfa, contained no detectable indoles. In short term incubations radioactive 2,4-D was taken up by D. dipsaci, but was not detected in nematodes cultured for six weeks on callused tissue. α^<14>C IAA was neither taken up from the media nor esterified by either nematode.
