1. The percentage of chrysanthemum pollen stained with Nitro blue tetrazolium ranged from 60 to 90%, indicating the presence of active succinate dehydrogenase in the pollen. 2. Exogenous application of oligosaccharides such as sucrose, lactose and raffinose at concentration of 20 to 35% favored germination of chrysanthemum pollen. However, the germination rate was not elevated higner than 10% in most of the chrysanthemum cultivars. 3. Sugar content of chrysanthemum pollen was less than 10% of the fresh weight. The sugar was composed of glucose, fructose and sucrose, the amount of sucrose being about four times as much as that of glucose or fructose. 4. The β-fructofuranosidase activity of chrysanthemum pollen was very high. These and relevant results suggest that the poor germination of chrysanthemum pollen is due neither to abortion nor to the deficiency of special sugars in the pollen.
