The effect of light on the toxicity to Anacystis nidulans of a range of substances was tested. The toxicity of the metals, especially Cu^<++>, was decreased by light, whereas that of all but one of the other compounds was markedly increased by light. The possibility is suggested that application of these results may be of practical importance in the use of antibiotics for obtaining axenic cultures, and also in the use of algicides to kill blue-green algae in baths and reservoirs.
