1. An attempt was made to correlate flagellar paralysis in the Chlamydomonas mutant M. 1002 with some change in nucleotide metabolism. 2. Cells of this mutant did not differ significantly from wild type in their ATP content. 3. Perchloric acid extracts of wild-type and mutant cells were compared by gradient formate elution chromatography from Dowex-1 columns. 4. Less nucleotide was extracted from mutant cells than from wild-type cells. 5. The 30-minute extracts of mutant cells contained a fraction (peak "B") absent from similar extracts of wild-type cells. This fraction contained hypoxanthine, guanine, and an unidentified UV-absorbing component. 6. It thus appears that flagellar paralysis in this case may be correlated with an impairment in the metabolism of purine compounds.
