The absolute requirement for light in the germination of achenes of Artemisia monosperma is as satisfied by radiant energy in the blue, green, yellow, red and far-red regions of the visible spectrum, as by unfiltered white light. The same stimulation was obtained by a short irradiation as by an uninterrupted one. Phytochrome seems to be either absent, or masked by a different pigment which absorbs light in the entire visible spectrum and thus initiates germination.
