1. The inhibitory effects of 5-bromouracil and 5-fluorouracil on the photoperiodically induced germination of Eragrostis ferruginea seed were investigated. 5-BU was more effective than 5-FU in inhibiting germination, but less effective in suppressing seedling elongation. 2. The inhibition of germination by 5-BU was specifically exerted on the inductive dark process, which is essential to the photoperiodic germination induction. A high concentration (10^<-1> M) of 5-FU also elicited a complete inhibition of germination. 5-FU, however, did not affect the photoperiodic induction processes, but inhibited the process(es) subsequent to them. The inhibition of germination by 5-BU or 5-FU was alleviated by neither uracil, thymidine nor orotic acid. 3. The seedling growth was effectively inhibited by 5-FU, and the inhibition was reversed by uracil, uridine and orotic acid, but not by thymine and thymidine. The effect of 5-FU may, therefore, possibly be by virtue of its depressing action upon ribonucleic acid synthesis.
