Previous experiments have evidenced that calcium is functionally implicated in glycine up-take by pulvinar motor cells of Mimosa pudica L. The present data show that compounds having anticalmodulin properties, compound 48/80 and the sulfonamide W-7, inhibited the amino acid uptake suggesting that a step in this process may be regulated by calmodulin. H^+ excretion by the tissues and transmembrane potential of the motor cells were not modified by these compounds, thus showing that the inhibition of amino acid uptake was not an indirect consequence of a decrease in the proton motive force energizing the glycine H^+ cotransport. Therefore, the data argue for the implication of calmodulin in a specific Ca^<2+>-regulated reaction.
