An alternating (asymmetric) bipolar staircase voltage clamp pulse series was used to investigate the action potential in Chara corallina. Using this protocol, we found that the action potential was present in the hyperpolarized region of the current-voltage relationship of the whole cell membrane. Effects of strong hyperpolarizing voltage steps, during the excitation process, can thus be studied.
