This study examined how the absence of sodium affects growth, photosynthesis, photosynthetic pigments and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity of ammonium-grown cells of Anabaena PCC 7119 cultured under low CO_2 levels (air) and alkaline pH. The growth rates were severely inhibited. After 24-h culture, photoreduction of dioxygen was observed which, how-ever, did not induce any photooxidation such as that found in sodium-deficient cells grown on nitrates or dinitrogen [Sanchez Maeso et al. (1987) Plant Physiol. 85: 585-587]. In fact, SOD in-creased significantly with sodium deficiency. No change was observed in the contents of photo-synthetic pigments.
