The accumulation of mRNAs encoded by two phytochrome-regulated genes in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) was examined after a single red light pulse in presence of cycloheximide. The initial increase in mRNA encoding the major light harvesting chlorophyll a/b binding protein (LHCP) could still be observed indicating that no protein synthesis-requiring step is essential for the transduction chain. The phyiochrome-induced decrease in mRNA encoding NADPH:protochlorophyllide oxidoreductase was considerably slowed.
