Adenine Derivatives as Inhibitors of Photosystem II : Relation with Cytokinin Activity

The effects of various 6-acylaminopurines and 6-alkylaminopurines on the photosynthetic electron flow were studied in isolated class II chloroplasts of spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) leaves. All compounds inhibited the benzoquinone-mediated oxygen evolution (PS II activity) but were inactive for O_2 evolution via PS I. Acyl compounds (as 6-benzoylaminopurine) were more active than alkyl compounds (as 6-benzylaminopurine). A good correlation was observed between efficiency on PS II and lipophilicity. Kinetic studies of the interaction between acyl- or alkylaminopurines and three herbicides, DCMU, atrazine and dinoseb, showed that adenine derivatives could act at the same site as atrazine but did not exhibit competitive interaction with DCMU or dinoseb. The cytokinin properties of the adenine derivatives were analyzed by the pea bud release test and the antisenescence test in cucumber cotyledons. In both cases, alkyl compounds were more active than acyl compounds and no correlation was found between these activities and the inhibitory effects on PS II.
