Excitation of characean cells was studied in experiments using a voltage-clamp. The efflux of monovalent anion was estimated from the inward current (J_i) and was compared with that measured by the conductometry method (J_g). It was found that, on the average, J_i was larger than J_g in Nitella. The Ca^<2+> influx is discussed with a view to explaining the discrepancy between J_i and J_g.
