The CO_2 absorption rate of the leaves and the CO_2 evolution rate of the roots of Cattleya were determined simultaneously during alternate light and dark periods. The CO_2 evolution rate of the roots decreased as the CO_2 absorption rate of leaves increased in the dark period and increased as the absorption rate of the leaves decreased in the light period. Severing the leaves in the dark increased the CO_2 evolution rate in roots to the vatue found in the hght.
