The effect of monochromatic irradiation in and near the UV-B region (280-320 nm) on motility (speed of movement) and white light-induced phototactic orientation was studied in slugs of the cellular slime mold Dictyostelium discoideum (NC-4). Motility decreased to about 50% in UV-B fluences (about 100 Jm^<-2> at 280 nm) well below those required to inhibit slug and sorocarp development or to impair viability. At wave-lengths of 270-300 nm, the phototactic orientation was almost totally eliminated by an exposure to UV (about 0.1 Wm^<-2>) for as short a time as half an hour when administered at the beginning of the 24 h exposure to white light.
