Oscillation in the growth rate as well the lag time for an IAA response in bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) hypocotyls were studied with a displacement transducer. The growing zone of the hypocotyl showed continuous oscillation in the growth rates for intact seedlings, hypocotyl explants with or without cotyledons, and explants submerged in water. The lag time for the IAA response was shortened by the presence of cotyledon tissues as well as by preliminary treatment with gibberellic acid and sucrose. When IAA first was applied to the basal cut surface then to the upper cut surface of the hypocotyl explant, two growth responses with distinct lag periods were found. The difference in the passage of auxin due to the direction of transport in the hypocotyl is discussed.
