The Correlation between Cd^<2+> Sensitivity and Cd^<2+> Uptake in the Strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae

The sensitivity of twelve strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae to Cd^<2+> was examined in correlation with the uptake of Cd^<2+>. Strains of S. cerevisiae were grouped into three categories depending on the sensitivity of cells grown on agar-plates containing various concentrations of Cd^<2+>. 1) The sensitive group did not grow in 0.1 mM Cd^<2+>. 2) The sub-tolerant group was capable of growth at 0.3 mM Cd^<2+>, but not at 0.4 mM Cd^<2+>. 3) The tolerant group was capable of growth at 0.4 mM Cd^<2+> or higher. In these strain groups the increase in sensitivity to Cd^<2+> was associated with an increase in the activity of Cd^<2+> absorption.
