The effect of slowly-induced water stress on the distribution of chlorophyll among the chlorophyll-protein complexes and on the chloroplast ultrastructure was studied in Salix sp. 'aquatica gigantea' grown under two different light regimes. Under high irradiance the proportion of chlorophyll was largest in the P700-chlorophyll-a protein complex (CPI). With increasing watcr stress the proportion of the light-harvesting chlorophyll a/b-protein complex (LHCP) and the chlorophyll a-protein complex (CPa) decreased, and these changes corresponded with inverse changes in the amount of chlorophyll in the protein free pigment (FP) band. The CPI complex remained stable throughout the drying period. Under low irradiance the LHCP complex was the largest structural component and its proportion of the total chlorophyll remained constant with increasing water stress. Under these light conditions CPI and the CPa complex appeared to be the labile components of the chloroplast lamellae. The integrity of the chloroplast membranes, as judged by electron microscopic observations, was preserved well under both light regimes and with increasing water stress. This and the relative constancy of the chlorophyll content during the experiments suggested that no great changes had occurred in the lamellar structure during water stress. In the chloroplast stroma area, however, large crystal formations were observed under the strong light regime with increasing water stress. In weak light these crystal structures could be seen in the well-watered controls, but seemed to disappear totally as water stress became severe.
