The role of glycosidases activity in the regulation of pollen tube extension in Amaryllis vittata during in vitro germination was investigated. No significant change in the enzyme activities (α-glucosidase, α-galactosidase, β-glucosidase and β-galactosidase) at different stages of tube growth was found. No increase in patent β-glucosidase activity assayed directly in a suspension of intact germinating pollen was observed. The results are discussed in the light of the differential role of wall-bound glycosidases in cells showing overall surface growth and tip growth i.e., pollen tubes.
