The level of methanol-extractable cytokinin-like substances increase in the leaf blades of onion plants after transfer to long-day conditions, reaching a maximum on approximately the 29th day followed by a fall to an undetectable level as in short-day plants. The activity was distributed in three different zones when subjected to Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography. A simple hypothesis based on the assumption that bulbing can be due to high cytokinin activity seems to be inadequate.
