The vegetative growth or frond multiplication in the short-day duckweed Lemna paucicostata 6746 (cultured in 1/2 Hutner's medium +1% sucrose in continuous darkness at 26℃) is expressed by the equation, Fr=Fr_0e^<at> where Fr_0 is the frond number (Fr) at zero time (t = 0) and a (= 0.214) is the growth rate. Floral induction occurs ca. 0.4 days after the start of the dark period and the first visible flower appears on day 2.7 of the dark period. As reproductive growth begins, the frond multiplication rate drops to 0.098. A lineage map constructed for the duckweed growth in continuous darkness indicates that one flower is produced at the expense of two fronds. These and relevant findings led the author to a set of parameters for a precise description of duckweed flowering.
