We investigated the nature of the stimulation by salts of the activity of a solubilized ATPase from pea cotyledon mitochondria. Our experiments demonstrated that salt stimulations were caused or regulated by anions. Stimulatory anions included oxyanions such as bicarbonate, but anions such as chloride and bromide were also affective, as were anions of organic acids. Since the specific polypeptide inhibitor of ATPase was shown to be absent from our preparation, the stimulations of the enzyme by anions were not caused by destruction or dissociation of the inhibitor. In most respects the anion stimulations were very similar to those reported with F_1-ATPases from yeast and mammalian tissues. The lack of oxyanion specificity requires that postulated roles for oxyanions be re-examined.
