1. Comparative studies were performed on growth, photosynthetic and respiratory activities, and pigment content in Rhodopseudomonas palustris. 2 The growth of the organism as infiuenced by various cultural conditions such as light, aerobiosis, anaerobiosis and nutritional factors was investigated. 3. The respiratory activity of the bacterium was found to be higher in dark-grown cells than in cells grown in the light. The photosynthetic activity did not significantly depend on the growth conditions of the culture. Cells of younger cultures were found to be more active than those of older cultures, with respect both to respiration and photosynthesis. 4. The pigment content was found to be higher in the light-grown cells than in the dark-grown ones. The ratio photosynthetic activity/ bacteriochlorophyll was significantly higher in the latter than in the former. 5. Light, as well as various nutritional factors, was found to exert a marked acceleration on pigment formation, although it has not yet been possible to culture cells completely lacking in photosynthetic pigments and accordingly in photosynthetic activity.
