Detailed action spectra for photoinduction and photoinactivation of germination of the crucifer, Arabidopsis thaliana, have been determined. The photoresponse has a typical red, far-red sensitivity with a peak susceptivity for induction at 660mμ and two maxima at 720 and 740mμ for inactivation. The response curve for induction is a logarithmic function of dose and for inactivation a linear function of dose. The close similarity of the action spectra with other photomor-phogenic action spectra in diverse plant tissues indicates that there is little attenuation by screening pigments or scattering before the photoreceptor is reached. The low dark germination percentage and the reproducible light sensitivity make the system advantageous for the study of photomimetic substances.
