Effects of kinetin and gamma radiation on the growth and chlorophyll synthesis of isolated radish cotyledons

Seeds of Raphanus sativus L. were irradiated with 120 and 240 Kr of gamma rays from a ^<137>Cs source. Chlorophyll synthesis and fresh weight increases (an estimate of cell expansion) of isolated cotyledons proved to be radioresistant processes. A lag phase in chlorophyll synthesis, removable by kinetin (10 mg/liter), was observed. Gamma radiation decreased the reactivity to kinetin in the removal of the lag phase, but did not affect the kinetin-stimulated fresh weight increase both in light and dark. Addition of 8-azaguanine to the incubation media reduced the kinetin-stimulated fresh weight in-crease. This inhibition was significantly enhanced by gamma radiation when the cotyledons were incubated in light.
